Abstract
dc:descriptionTHE OBELIAN HIGGS MODEL IS STUDIED ON A SPACE-TIME LATTICE. THE MODEL EXHIBITS THREE PHASES, NAMELY COULOMB, HIGGS AND CONFINING PHASE. THE COLEMIN-WEINBERG MECHANISM IS SEEN TO OPERATE. THE EFFECTIVE POTENTIAL IS CALCULATED BY COUPLING THE SYSTEM TO EXTERNAL CURRENTS. IN THE HIGGS PHASE THERE EXISTS A REGION OF VALUES OF THE SCOLAR FIELD, WHERE THE EFFECTIVE POTENTIAL CANNOT BE DEFINED. A NEW TYPE OF EFFECTIVE POTENTIAL IS PROPOSED AND CALCULATED; IT TURNS OUT TO HAVE THE FORM OF THE SEMICLASSICAL POTENTIAL, SO IT ALLOWS FOR AN INTERPRETATION OF THE HIGGS MECHANISM IN FULL ANALOGY WITH THE SEMICLASSICAL PICTURE. FINALLY, THE MASSES OF THE VARIOUS BOUND STATES ARE CALCULATED FROM THEIR CORRELATION FUNCTIONS.
