Performance Review of Pipe to Structure Connections In Storm Water Infrastructure
Abstract
dc:description.abstract
This thesis evaluates the field performance of resilient pipe connectors used in the Florida Department of Transportation District 7 stormwater drainage infrastructure. These flexible rubber-based pipe-to-structure connections are intended to provide a watertight seal between drainage pipes and concrete structures such as manholes and ditch bottom inlets while allowing limited movement. Although resilient connectors were installed in District 7 as early as the 2000’s, no performance evaluation had been conducted until this study.

Inspection locations were selected using project records, as-built plans, Google Maps, and feasibility of inspectable sites. Additional inspections were conducted in FDOT Districts 2 & 5 on traditional connections to evaluate their performance. Field inspections were completed using a Quickview AirHD [1] inspection camera to document pipe-to-structure connections and evaluate connection visibility, condition, and distress features. Observations were made based on visible signs of leakage or infiltration, cracking, material degradation, and grout coverage.

Results showed that many resilient connectors remained visible and generally intact, although a substantial number of expected resilient connector locations were partially grouted over. Traditional connections were usually easier to identify visually because of the grout or mortar ring around the interface, but they more often exhibited distress such as cracking, material degradation, and leakage-related indicators. Overall, this study provides a field-based assessment of pipe-to-structure connection performance and supports continued inspection, monitoring, and improved installation practices for stormwater drainage systems.
