The differentiation of non-louse-borne fevers of the typhus group occurring in the United Provinces, India

This thesis is that the non- epidemic cases of typhus fever which occur sporadically in the Unite:]. 'rovinces, India, do not constitute a single disease entity. In a series of twenty cases analysed six can be classified in the scrub typhus-tsutsugamushi disease group. Four of these were cases of the latter condition, which is now regarded as mite- typhus, a condition which has not been described previously in India. In the re- maining fourteen cases two distinct types of serologi- cal reaction are found, and these correspond to some extent to differences in epidemiology end clinical type. whether they are due to viruses of differeht type, or to different strains of the same virus is discussed. Analogies with other typhus group diseases are drawn and appear to indicate that both these groups are tick - borne.
