Abstract
dc:description.abstract
Atget's content and style are re-examined. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze facts about Atget's life, to draw conclusions about his technical, contextual and formal style, and to determine whether the published view of his style is representative of his work as a whole. Conclusions are drawn through an examination of a variety of written source material and from examination of some of Atget's original prints. Eugene Atget's photographs of Paris and its surrounding areas are beautiful, atmospheric images. Yet, Atget's utilitarian interest in the document illustrates his intention to create a sociological, historical and anthropological view of Paris. Once this intention is assumed, his work takes on a political meaning.
