Visualizing medical data using direct volume rendering

Abstract

<p>Volume Rendering is a technique used to display large-scale three dimensional datasets that are generated from physical measurement or computational simulation. The objective of volume rendering is to produce two dimensional images that allow the viewer to easily interpret the three dimensional nature of the dataset. This paper provides an analysis and comparison of various rendering techniques in the context of visualizing medical data. In particular, two specific implementations of direct volume renderers are discussed. Finally, several images are displayed which show the results of applying the two renderers to various CT and MRI datasets.</p>
