An integrative approach to English composition, ESL, English for specific/special purposes (ESP), and technical communication

<p>"Different teaching methods are used across the disciplines to teach English composition, English as a Second or Other Language (ESL), and technical communication. In the contemporary university, instructors are expected to teach a variety of courses to a variety of audiences for a variety of purposes. Common threads among the disciplines can dissipate the perception of the university "silos" of distinctly separate and unique disciplines. While the distinction of each field's unique qualities must remain intact, recognition of overlapping interests prove a way to keep students interested, challenged, and engaged. By examining the commonalities among the disciplines, university instructors might tap into the background knowledge of an increasingly diverse student population; therefore, igniting aspects of student success and retention of enhancing student engagement and interest.
