Excited-state organic chemistry: Tuning photoprotective and photoredox properties
Abstract
dc:descriptionThis thesis focuses on two main applications of photochemistry: photoprotection and photoredox catalysis. In the context of photoprotection, the synthesis, characterization and study of the properties of new photoprotective molecules against solar radiation are presented. Additionally, mechanistic investigations of photoredox catalytic transformations were carried out through theoretical calculations. The dissertation is organized into six chapters: Chapter 1 introduces the concept of photochemistry, tracing its development from ancient times to the present day, and provides a brief overview of its fundamental principles. It also highlights representative applications, illustrating the versatility of this field. Chapter 3 is divided into three sections: an overview of the state of the art in the field of photoprotection; the synthesis, design, characterization, and evaluation of the key properties of new natural-based photoprotective molecules; and the development of a novel family of sunscreens designed to mitigate damage from high-energy visible radiation (HEVR). Chapter 4 also consists of three sections: an introduction to the general principles of photoredox catalysis, a systematic study of halogen atom transfer (XAT) processes from phenyl and cyclohexyl halides using four representative α-aminoalkyl radicals and the parametrization of a library of 100 boryl radicals using Density Functional Theory (DFT). Chapter 6 describes the experimental methods and procedures to develop the research work.
