Prevalencia de obesidad y síndrome metabólico en población preadolescente en La Rioja. Análisis de factores sociodemográficos, epidemiológicos, antropométricos, valores analíticos y mediadores inflamatorios

Background: childhood obesity can be considered a global epidemic. Its multifactorial etiology implies a multidisciplinary approach. In addition to the already known associated risk factors, there are new circumstances of modern life (ultra-processed food, increased screen time, insufficient physical exercise...). The consequences of the development of an associated metabolic syndrome will involve cardiovascular, endocrinological and psychological events that are difficult to reverse. Therefore, It is essential to search for clinical and analytical markers with the aim of early prevention. Patients and method: a cross-sectional study was carried out focusing on a group of 11,473 children aged 10 to 14 years living in La Rioja in 2018. A group of 340 subjects was selected. All of them underwent a survey and anthropometric data were collected in their Health Center. The group of obese subjects (64) underwent a second phase consisting of a blood sample taken at the Universitary San Pedro Hospital in Logroño. Routine biochemical parameters and inflammatory markers related to obesity were analysed in this sample. Results: 18.8% of the child population studied was overweight (11.5%) or obese (7.3%). A higher proportion of children in the overweight-obese group. Factors such as birth weight, having 2 or more siblings, exercising more than 4 hours a week, or eating at home have been shown to be related to the risk of being overweight or obese. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the group of overweight-obese patients is 5.1%. From the point of view of inflammatory markers, a positive correlation between leptin and body mass index has been demonstrated. The leptin/adiponectin ratio also shows a positive correlation.
