El solar de Tejada, mil años de evolución institucional: de posible behetría medieval a bien de interés cultural

The Solar de Tejada is an existing institution in La Rioja, based in the municipality of Laguna de Cameros, where it has a property composed of an urban property (the ancestral house) and several rustic properties (the lands that complete its heritage), as well as a rich archive, which belongs, in a pro-undivided regime, to each and every one of its members, “diviseros” received by genealogical proof that demonstrates their direct family connection with the founder of the lineage, Sancho Fernández de Tejada, legendary hero of the mythical battle of Cravijo, for whose warlike actions he would have received as a reward from King Ramiro I of Asturias the lordship over the Cadines mountains (where the aforementioned lands are located), a coat of arms and the status of nobleman, all of which could be transmitted to his descendants through male and female. This founding myth was institutionalized by a Royal Charter granted by king Henry IV of Castile and León in 1460, in the midst of the Navarrese civil war, and later confirmed by the Catholic Kings, Emperor Charles, and the Bourbon kings between Ferdinand VI and Juan Carlos II, both inclusive, as well as the provisional Government of the Nation that governed Spain from 1868 to 1871, and Francisco Franco, as head of the Spanish State. For different reasons, which are set out in this work, the Solar de Tejada can be considered a legal, social and cultural vestige of the medieval lordships of family or lineage behetry, with incidence and implications in the medieval repopulation and border policies, which have survived to this day through a peculiar institution that has evolved from an indivisible community of property covered with privileges, distinctions and rights of representation of a noble nature (recognized until recently in the Guía de Títulos y Grandezas del Reino —Titles and Grandeurs of the Kingdom guide—, of the Ministry of Justice within of the section “Lordships and other dignities”), until its current status as an intangible Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), after the declaration initiated by the General Directorate of Culture of the Government of La Rioja, approved and incorporated into the list of BICs of the Autonomous Community of La Rioja since 2016 because of the uniqueness of its symbolic heritage, present in La Rioja and projected in Spain and the world through its more than four thousand current members.
