The problem of elucidating the genetic control mechanism of developing organisms is extremely- interesting to the developmental biologist. Our current knowledge of genetic control tells us that hereditary information is coded primarily into nuclear DNA, characteristic differentiated phenotypes being expressed through selective read-out of particular loci of the DNA helices. But this information has not solved the central problem of the control of development even though the Jacob and Monod theories have explained many of the details of gene action. The long standing paradox of DNA constancy vs.specificity of gene products still remains unresolved. Even if one takes the view that specific steps in development are dependent only on the synthesis of specific structural and non-structural proteins with all else being spontaneous processes, one is still faced with the problem of differential initiation of protein synthesis with a common code at its base.
