Clinical Value of High Submuscular Placement of the Reservoir During Penile Prosthesis Implantation

The aim of the doctoral thesis was to present objective advantages and disadvantages of ectopic high submuscular reservoir placement and to further establish the method. This method is a good surgical alternative to classic implantation of the reservoir into the space of Retzius, especially in patients after one or more operations in the small pelvis or in the groin region. Many significant complications can be avoided by ectopic reservoir placement. Our findings suggest that the novel reservoir placement is safe, efficacious, and accompanied by excellent patient satisfaction even if the reservoir is initially palpable or visible. Even then, the patient does not request revision and is as satisfied as with traditional reservoir placement. Ectopic reservoir placement’s only possible complications are visibility or palpability of the component. The fact that patients are not requesting revision upon discovery of these complications bodes well for the future of ectopic placement supplanting traditional placement.
