From Kyiv with Love: the Push to Legalize Same-Sex Civil Partnerships
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis master’s thesis will analyze the hyper-Europeanization occurring in Ukrainian society regarding the potential legalization of same-sex civil partnerships following the Russian 2022 full-scale invasion. To conduct this study, open-source media was collected from various groups within Ukrainian society to determine which arguments are more significant regarding the introduction of Draft Bill 9103, or the legalization of same-sex civil partnerships. Media against the legalization was also collected to determine which arguments were more significant as to why some Ukrainians are against the legalization of same-sex civil partnerships. This thesis utilizes the contemporary case of Ukraine’s Draft Bill 9103 to expand on Peter A. Hall and Rosemary C. R. Taylor, and Pertti Alasuutari by exploring not only cultural diffusion and legitimacy, but also cultural rejection. I will also contrast cultural diffusion with Frank Schimmelfennig and Ulrich Sedelmeier’s external incentives model and the logic of consequences.
