Emergency service workers' coping in response to traumatic events : associations with psychiatric symptoms
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis study aimed to explore the relationship between coping strategies and posttraumatic symptomology in emergency service workers in the Western Cape. Three fundamental coping strategies were assessed: seeking social support, problem-solving, and avoidance. I hypothesised that seeking social support and problem-solving would be associated with decreased levels of psychiatric symptoms, while avoidance would be associated with increased levels of psychiatric symptoms.
