Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the commonest monogenic disorders of man, affecting approximately 1 in 1000 of the world’s population. It is characterised by the progressive development and expansion of renal cysts, which eventually replace the normal architecture of the kidney and lead to kidney failure. (Harris 1999) ADPKD is a common cause of end-stage renal failure. It accounts for 5-8% of patients in haemodialysis units worldwide. It also has serious social and economic consequences. Of the UK National Health Service’s budget, 2% is spent on renal diseases. With 8% of renal patients on renal replacement programs in the UK having a diagnosis of ADPKD, this one disease commands considerable financial resources.
