The New Creative Alliance: Investigating the Dynamics of Human-AI Collaboration in Creative Endeavours
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis thesis investigates the transformative impact of AI, especially Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) on creativity, exploring the profound ways in which AI reshapes the creative landscape and human-AI collaboration. With AI’s evolution, it has become an active co-creator, challenging our conception of creativity, traditionally viewed as an exclusively human domain. This work provides valuable insights into the changing nature of creative work and the future of co-creation. Structured into six chapters, the research begins with a literature review on creativity and AI, examining their nascent convergence in human-AI collaboration. Subsequent chapters present four papers developed during the doctoral research. The first paper investigates how human creative abilities influence the efficacy of human-AI collaboration in creative tasks, finding that individuals with higher creativity better harness AI’s potential. The second paper examines the growth and learning aspects of human-AI partnerships, revealing that AI collaboration might impede personal creative development, especially among less creative individuals. The third paper explores AI’s role as an advisor, suggesting that AI-generated feedback could enhance task orientation compared to human feedback. The fourth paper investigates a new form of creative ideation, AI-AI collaboration and compares it with human-human collaboration. The final chapter outlines future studies and reflects on the broader research journey. This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of AI’s role in creative processes, suggesting new models for human-AI collaboration and offering practical implications for the creative industries.
