Abstract

dc:description

In Sardinia written sources testify to the presence of a significant number of women associated with the commissioning of works of art. Female names appear in relation to artistic patronage, like architectural, pictorial, sculptural and sumptuary works. These clients probably were part of the aristocratic families that ruled the island. The research proceeds from the analysis of written sources and material documentation to define the role of this female figures as clients of some medieval Sardinian works of art between the tenth and fourteenth centuries. The investigation into the role of women as clients can be clarifying the position of female figures in the decorative choices. Examples of gender commission can be found in all of Europe. For this reason, comparing Sardinian evidences with other regions it could be advantageous for the analysis of the period.
