Relações bilaterais Brasil- Israel em perspectiva histórica: convergências e divergências
Abstract
dc:description.abstractA misunderstanding between Brazil and Israel occurred in 2014 and had an intense repercussion in the Brazilian and international media, when then-Brazilian chancellor Luís Alberto Figueiredo decided to call the Brazilian ambassador in Tel Aviv for consultations. In response, the Israeli chancellor criticized Brazil's act as a "diplomatic dwarf." The media propagated this event and in some cases described it as a "diplomatic crisis" between the two countries. In view of this context, the purpose of this paper is to review the relations between Brazil and Israel in order to verify if any other friction occurred in the history of this relationship, examining its motives and identifying possible phases of it. This investigation is based on the external policy analysis methodology, which allowed a comparison between the intensity of the misalignments found and their motivations. Another significant moment of separation between the two countries was found during the Geisel government with the anti- Zionist vote in the UN, concluding that the Brazilian relationship with Israel, mainly in relation to the Arab-Israeli conflict, is conditional on a pragmatic calculation of Brazilian foreign policy.
