Carnaval de Salvador: Mercantilização e Produção de Espaços de Exclusão, Segregação e Conflito/

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Salvador's modern carnival follows Shrovetide at the end of the 19th century, initially adopting models imported from European carnivals. However, even at that stage, he was already able to make his mark through the entities that came to the streets bringing African motifs and that, later, would be known as Afoxés. Throughout the 20th century, carnival incorporated the most varied cultural manifestations of the place, although this had always been a reason for intense class and ethnic disputes. Therefore, it is possible to affirm that the party, even expressing the most legitimate representations of the city's inhabitants, has always been a stage for intense conflicts that resulted in exclusions and segregations, especially of the poor and black population. Depending on political, economic factors and the appropriation of techniques, carnival always alternated between moments that occurred with greater or lesser intensity. This research has as its object of analysis the period that spans from the mid-1980s to the present moment, with this choice being due, basically, to the fact that it is during this period that several conflicts arise resulting from the exponential growth of the party and of its growing transformation in the commercial space.
