Análise da ruptura de um aterro sanitário sobre a argila mole do Caju

This dissertation presents the analysis of an embankment failure on a soft clay deposit in the district of Caju/RJ. The embankment consists of a sanitary fill. Index tests were performed to obtain the geotechnical characteristics of the soft clay material, wich were compared with another well known clays. Oedometer tests, in situ and laboratory vane tests, and triaxial tests, were also carried out. Total stress stability calculations were carried out in order to back analyse the failure and to obtain the mobilized strenght at both the fill and clay foundation. It was concluded that for an embankment cohesion of 0 to 20 kPa, the ratio between the back analysed Su and the in situ post-failure Su has a magnitude similar to the soft clay sensitivity.
