The embankment consists of a sanitary fill. Index tests were performed to obtain the geotechnical characteristics of the soft clay material, wich were compared with another well known clays. Oedometer tests, in situ and laboratory vane tests, and triaxial tests, were also carried out. Total stress stability calculations were carried out in order to back analyse the failure and to obtain the mobilized strenght at both the fill and clay foundation.
