It features the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the XIX century, was proeminent for the introduction and development of formal apprenticeship of the fine arts. As a consequence, Brazil became an important center of artistic production in the Americas. It was in this city that strict ritualism of academic teaching reached its peak, imposing neoclassicism as a predominant style. As masculine authority ruled society, it was difficult for women to exceed in the fine arts. In this context, we present the biography of the artist Abigail de Andrade, precursor of Social Realism was this painter's forro of expression and style and was used to convey her views of the world and her feelings and concerns for those less fortuna te in society. Ready to carry out any artistic challege regarding the painter's craft, but she often resorted to the use of a preconcieved technique and iconographical repertoire drawn frorn the Acaderny.
