Abstract
dc:description.abstractOn a Wednesday night at the end of summer, a man who claims to be a missionary visits Hyde Park Baptist church and plays a graphic film purported to show the lifestyles of “unreached people groups.” After the video plays, the man disappears without a trace. Over the next several weeks, the congregants present on that Wednesday night begin to display increasingly erratic behavior: doomsday stockpiling, sexual deviancy, strange obsessions. As each member struggles to keep their behavior a secret, cracks begin to form on the façade of both the church members and Hyde Park Baptist Church itself. Eventually, Pastor Tom must decide what action to take to rebuild his church, which is slowly falling to pieces. Told through a chorus of voices, ‘The Savages’ is a mediation on desensitization, moral puritanism, and secrets.
