Subversion in the serranillas of Juan Ruíz and the Marqués de Santillana.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study concerns the complexity of a Spanish genre first seen in fourteenth-century Castile, the serranilla. The thesis first considers the serranilla's varied origins-- French, Arabic, Galician-Portuguese literatures--with respect to their influence on the peninsular genre. The focus then shifts to the subversive ways in which Juan Ruíz employs didacticism, common in the medieval period, to teach both conventional and unconventional lessons. Finally, the study turns to the political and erotic messages of domination in Santillana's serranillas, disguised by an exterior façade created through stylized prosody and by including little or no action. These three points reveal that the serranillas of Juan Ruíz and Santillana are much more complex than they outwardly appear initially. Though often treated as superficial, unimportant, or marginal, the peninsular serranilla by either Ruíz or Santillana is both complex and profound.
