The focus then shifts to the subversive ways in which Juan Ruíz employs didacticism, common in the medieval period, to teach both conventional and unconventional lessons. Finally, the study turns to the political and erotic messages of domination in Santillana's serranillas, disguised by an exterior façade created through stylized prosody and by including little or no action. These three points reveal that the serranillas of Juan Ruíz and Santillana are much more complex than they outwardly appear initially.
