The peace of the Gael : myth and metaphor in the rhetoric of Patrick Pearse.

The Easter Rising of 1916 acted as the catalyst for Irish nationalists to violently oppose British authority in Ireland, eventually gaining independence for the southern twenty-six counties from Britain. The rhetoric of Patrick Pearse characterized the revolutionary fanaticism of the leaders of the Rising and provides an excellent example for the study of mythic rhetoric. This study analyzes several of Pearse's speeches and additional texts in order to reveal a pragmatic means of studying metaphor and myth in the rhetorical context. Through the examination of Pearse's rhetoric, this thesis asserts that metaphors help to construct myths, allowing the two genres of criticism to be used in tandem with one another.
