The employment process : effects of the resume, interview, and reference report.

Research in the employment process has traditionally focused upon resume construction and interviewing. While revealing, this research tells us little about how the resume, interview, and a third component, the reference report, interact to shape employment decisions. This study observed the influence of these instruments in shaping decisions about the applicant's hireability and competence. To study this influence, 120 subjects (N = 15 per condition) acted as interviewers. The subjects evaluated a resume (positive or negative), an interview (competent or incompetent), read reference reports (positive or negative) and subsequently made decisions about an applicant's attractiveness, competence, credibility, and hireability. Results from this research indicate that the interview and reference report are the most significant instruments for creating impressions of an applicant. While a number of main and interaction effects were related to these instruments, the resume had little impact on interviewer perceptions of the applicant. Results were interpreted and observations were made based upon the results of the study.
