Baylor University.

An examination of the ethical and moral values of public relations practitioners.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study examined the moral and ethical concerns of public relations practitioners and students. A questionnaire consisting of 50 Likert-type items was completed by public relations practitioners and public relations students at Baylor University and the University of North Texas. Through factor analysis, the following was determined: (1) Respondents were motivated by similar concerns as previous research had revealed, though they made distinctions in certain areas of morality. (2) "Younger" practitioners had higher mean judgment scores on two out of nine factors identified in the study. (3) Women had higher mean judgment scores on two out of nine factors. (4) More respondents considered themselves responsible to their client/employer than to society. (5) Responses made it impossible to label either the PRSA College of Fellows or TPRA as more ethical. (6) Students and practitioners are motivated by different ethical factors, though they share some common concerns. (7) Practitioners who consider themselves responsible to society are concerned with different ethical issues than those who consider themselves responsible to their client/employer.
