Local television news coverage of African Americans in Waco, Texas.

A content analysis of the 10:00 p.m. news shows of the Waco, Texas CBS affiliate KWTX examines the portrayals of minorities, especially African Americans. The study analyzes a reconstructed week of 10 p.m. newscasts from January 1995 to December 1995. The hypotheses include: H1. There is a significantly greater proportion of whites in positive stories than African Americans in positive stories; H2. There is a significantly greater average number of African Americans in stereotypical stories than in non-stereotypical stories; H3. In crime stories, there is a significantly greater proportion of nonwhites in criminal roles than whites in criminal roles. The results of this study indicated blacks are shown in more stereotypical stories than whites, but not in more criminal roles or positive stories than whites.
