Baylor University.

An aesthetic analysis of the most popular post-secondary Spanish language introductory pedagogical videos.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This analysis provides an interdisciplinary study of the pedagogical videos currently utilized in the largest language programs in American universities. Elements of philosophy, film theory, and foreign language pedagogy are combined to analyze the existing video series and to develop a theoretical template for further examination and production. This study involves a historical examination of the aesthetic, an ideological examination of film theory, and a research-based analysis of video pedagogy. From these disciplines a concise evaluative tool is developed and applied to the five most common video series used in universities for Spanish language introductory courses. A synthesis of this analysis yields a theoretical model of the ideal foreign language pedagogical video. This study has both academic and commercial applications.
