Speech styles in Javanese and Balinese : a comparative study
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis thesis is a comparative study of the phenomenon usually referred to as "speech styles" or speech "levels" and found in Javanese and Balinese, Western Austronesian languages spoken on the islands of Java and Bali in the modern state of Indonesia. It looks at the historical relationship between the systems in the two languages, as well as attempting a synchronic description of major structural features of each system. A reconstruction of features of the Javanese system ·at an earlier historical stage is proposed.
