The development of learner autonomy through Internet resources and its impact on English language attainment

The main aim of the dissertation was related to the development of learner autonomy by means of Internet resources and its impact on English language attainment. The theoretical chapters of the dissertation are dedicated to providing an overview of some key issues connected with the concept of autonomy, discussing the use of computer technology and the Internet in particular in language teaching and learning as well as presenting a number of empirical investigations of autonomy in language learning that have been conducted in recent years in many parts of the world. The empirical chapters of the dissertation are devoted to discussing issues related to the design and implementation of the research project and its results. The dissertation closes with conclusions and pedagogical implications which include a set of recommendations for the development of autonomy in Polish schools and directions for future empirical investigations. Zasadniczym celem rozprawy doktorskiej było określenie wpływu wykorzystania zasobów Internetu na rozwój autonomii uczniów szkoły ponadgimnazjalnej oraz wpływu zwiększającej się samodzielności na poziom opanowania języka angielskiego w przypadku różnych podsystemów i sprawności językowych. Część teoretyczna pracy przedstawia kwestie dotyczące autonomii, wykorzystania technologii komputerowej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Internetu, oraz prezentuje wybrane projekty badawcze dotyczących autonomii w nauczaniu języka obcego przeprowadzone w ostatnich latach w wielu różnych krajach. Część empiryczna pracy omawia kwestie dotyczące projektu badawczego i jego rezultaty. Rozprawę wieńczy podsumowanie zawierające szereg sugestii dotyczących rozwijania autonomii w polskich szkołach oraz wskazówki dotyczące dalszych badań.
