The Influence of Children's Literature and Mathematics on a Low-Achieving Second Grade

The purpose of this study was to detennine whether or not children's literature and mathematics would positively affect the mathematic attitudes and mathematic achievement of low-achieving second grade participants. A sample population of 13 second grade participants was drawn from a class in a rural school district. The Elementary Math Attitude Survey was administered prior to, and after, the three-week study to determine if there were any enhancements of attitudes towards mathematics. The Math Skill Survey was also administered prior to, and after, the three-week study to detennine if there any increase in student achievement. The results of this study were analyzed using SPSS program. The researcher used tTests for paired samples. The results of this study indicated that the implication of children's literature into the mathematic program in this school setting had a positive influence in second grade mathematic achievement. However, there was not a significant increase in the participants' attitudes towards mathematics.
