Optical Spectroscopy Analysis of the Physicochemical Properties of Poly(3-Hexylthiophene) (P3Ht) Solutions Using Various Solvents Towards Controllable Formation of Polymeric Aggregates.
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe understanding of aggregates formed by conjugated polymers is of fundamental importance to consolidate them in the scenario of novel materials for organic technologies. Polymeric aggregates manifest themselves in H- and J-types or in a combination of them, such as HJ-types, and optical techniques (e.g. absorption and photoluminescence) have seen significant success in probing these different types of aggregates as well as their behaviors. Models describing H-, J- or HJ- types play an important role in characterizing and understanding polymer's morphological and electrical properties. In this project, it has been studied, via optical spectroscopy, the excited state (i.e. absorption) and radiative recombination (i.e. photoluminescence) properties of isolated and aggregated chains from the conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). Even though P3HT in the form of thin films has been thoroughly studied in the past decades, some significant aspects of P3HT solutions have been overlooked by the scientific community, especially the blending procedure and the influence created by, for example, different variants of stabilizers used in critical solvents such as chloroform (CHCl3). In addition to absorption (Abs) and photoluminescence (PL), one property of light, named polarization, has proven difficult to be measured and subsequently to be analyzed in a meaningful way. One way to unravel the information that lies beneath polymetric emissive light's polarization is through a method proposed by Stokes in the late 1800s. This work will cover how to embed the idea of Stokes parameters into laboratory measurements, along with computational fitting and traditional optical techniques, Abs and PL, to study P3HT's solutions under different versions of a solvent with distinct stabilizers. By conducting such experiments, it has been possible to gain a deeper understanding of the material's properties, including recipes for controlling the formation of aggregates and the transfer of energy in different conditions.
