Achievement and Retention in Probability and Statistics: A Comparison of Two Teaching Strategies

This study attempted to compare the effectiveness of two methods of teaching probability and statistics in Algebra II classes. One class was taught for 3 weeks using conventional methods; the other class was divided into small groups to work on projects independent of teacher and textbook. A multiple-choice test of 25 items constructed by the researcher was administered to both classes as a pretest, at the conclusion of the unit as a posttest, and again 6 weeks later to measure retention. The results of this study may provide insight or direction to teachers or researchers who might hesitate to vary their teaching style without evidence that the proposed innovation has research-based validity.
