One class was taught for 3 weeks using conventional methods; the other class was divided into small groups to work on projects independent of teacher and textbook. A multiple-choice test of 25 items constructed by the researcher was administered to both classes as a pretest, at the conclusion of the unit as a posttest, and again 6 weeks later to measure retention.
