The Effects of hypertensive education on Knowledge, Self-efficacy, Self- care behavior in clients with Coronary Artery Disease
Abstract
dc:descriptionCoronary artery disease(CAD) is well known as a major cause of myocardial ischemia. Main mechanism of CAD is atherosclerosis and major risk factors of atherosclerosis are hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hyperlipidemia. In clients with CAD, strict control of blood pressure is important and adequate education program for these clients is necessary. We aimed to evaluate the effect of hypertensive education on the Knowledge related to hypertension, self-efficacy and self-care. We studied 38 hypertensive clients with CAD admitted at A university hospital in S city. They were assigned to an experimental group(18), and a control group(20). A tool developed by Lee Young-Whee(1994) was used to measure Knowledge related to hypertension, a tool developed by Park Young-Im(1994) was used for self-efficacy, a tool developed by Lee Jung Mi(2002) was used for self-care. Data collection was done for 8 weeks from October 1 to November 30, 2006 using questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed with X²- test, t-test, Pearson correlation using the SPSS Win 11.5 program. The following is a summary of the results of the study Hypothesis 1. "the experimental group which had the hypertensive education will have higher knowledge scores than the control group that did not have the hypertensive education" was supported(t=-5.22, p=.000). Hypothesis 2. "the experimental group which had the hypertensive education will have higher self-efficacy scores than the control group that did not have the hypertensive education" was supported(t=-6.57, p=.000). Hypothesis 3. "the experimental group which had the hypertensive education will hare better self-care ability than the control group that did not have the hypertensive education" was supported (t=-8.47, p=.000). 4. Knowledge related to hypertension of clients before enrollement demonstrated significant correlation self-efficacy and self-care(p=.000) Hypertensive education for the hypertensive clients with CAD was helped to improve knowledge related to hypertension of clients, self-efficacy and self-care, and educational program used in this study might be useful nursing interventional tool for this clients population. Further studies for the long term clinical effect of hypertensive education on the knowledge related to hypertension, self-efficacy and self-care are needed. Furthermore, since life style modification is important to control hypertension. effect of education and intervention of life style modification on management of hypertension. We suggest to develop standardized hypertensive educational program for the hypertensive clients with CAD.
