Factors affecting the Pain & Disability of the Low back pain patients

This study is the factive and descriptive research to identify the factors affecting the pain & disability of the low back pain patients. The subject of research is collected from 84 patients who were proved the disease through MRI(magnetic resonance image)at the neurosurgery unit at A university Hospitals in S city, Korea, and were admitted to hospital with low back pain, radiating leg pain and lumbar spine lesion. The research data were collected from June 3, 2004 to march 30, 2005, and were comprehended by the individual interviewees who had the factors affecting the pain and disability of the low back pain patients through structured questionnaires. The pain index and functional disorder in this study were based on the Visual analoque scale(VAS) and the Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire by fairbank(1980), and these data were proceeded by using SPSS/WIN version 11.5 The result of these study analysis were followed as below: 1. The pain index and functional disorder in accordance with age, academic background, medical history, state of marriage and occupation had no significantly similar difference statistically, but the data showed the tendency women more appeal the pain than men in a gender, and women were presented significantly higher by statical in the functional disorder.(t=-2.251, p=.05). 2. The pain index and functional disorder in accordance with smoking rate had no significantly similar difference statistically, but this subject was investigated significantly higher figures than general people in Korea by statical.(p=.000). 3. The pain and functional disorder in accordance with anthropometric factors of body had no significantly similar difference statistically, but both men and women showed the tendency that increasing body mass index(BMI) and waist-hip ration(WHR) has an effect of appearing higher the pain and functional disorder. The body mass index(BMI) and waist-hip ration(WHR) rate of this subject was investigated significantly higher figures than general people in Korea by statical.(p=.000). 4. The pain and functional disorder in accordance with diagnosis, chief symptoms, motor change and sensory change had no significantly similar difference statistically between the research clusters, but they were investigated that the pain progressing chronic symptom appeared the serious pain and functional disorder. In conclusion, we could verify that gender, smoking status, body mass index(BMI), waist-hip ration(WHR) and pain period affect on the factors affecting the pain and disability of the low back pain patients.
