Effects of a smart phone application on breast self-examination: a feasibility study

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a smart phone application on breast selfexamination , and to evaluate the effects of the application to the behavioral modification of breast self-examination. METHODS: A developed smart phone app based on Android OS had functions on selfexamination date alarm, reminder to encourage her mother to practice breast selfexamination together, record keeping and education content with video clips. Women aged more than 19 years were enrolled for the effect evaluation of the application. Two series of questionnaires were examined before and after the use of the application through e-mail, telephone and face to face interview from July 2012 to September 2012. RESULTS: In baseline study before the use of the application, 45 women were enrolled (age 29.5±5.9). Of the participants, subjects who ever practiced breast selfexamination were 28 (62.2%), however who performed in proper time was only 1 (2.2%) in the baseline survey. After use of the application, breast self-examination increased from 28 to 32 (62.2% to 71.1%, p = 0.503). In subgroup analysis (age < 30 years), breast self-examination significantly increased from 8 to 18 (36.4% to 81.8%, p = 0.002). The breast self-examination at proper time also significantly increased from 1 to 15 (2.2% to 33.3%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The use of the developed smart phone application increased breast self-examination for women younger than 30 years. To confirm long term effect of the mobile application on breast self-examination, further research should be performed.
