Clinical characteristics of acute brain swelling in patients with successfully resuscitated from non-traumatic out of hospital cardiac arrest
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe number of cardiac arrest patients who were resuscitated has been increasing as the development of emergency medical service. Brain swelling is often found in the patients with return of spontaneous circulation. This study is going to identify risk factor for brain swelling and its frequency, analyze the effect of brain swelling on neurological outcome, and compare with other studies. For 24 months since 2007, retrospective analysis had been conducted on cardiac arrest patients who visited the emergency room at an university hospital. According to computed tomography finding, successfully resuscitated 37 patients were devided into 2 groups: 14 patients with brain swelling and 23 patients without one. Comparative studies on post lab finding and several factors were made. 14 patients with brain swelling were significantly young and high clinical performance catery score. Initial serum lactic acid level showed good correlation with brain swelling. Urgent study of CT and aggressive treatment should be conducted when brain swelling is suspicious after consideration of various prognostic factors.
