Comparison on metabolic markers and hormone level according to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level
Abstract
dc:descriptionOBJECT: Vitamin D have diverse effects on various metabolic markers and hormone. We investigated multiple roles of vitamin D by comparing metabolic markers and hormone levels according to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level. METHODS: We investigated 3,399 women who had periodic health examination in Ajou university hospital from March 1st, 1997 to February 28th, 2005. Height, Weight, Waist circumference, and blood pressure were measured. Socioeconomic status was asked by questionnaire. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, fasting glucose, uric acid, albumin, lipid profile, high sensitive C-reactive protein, homocysteine and white blood cell counts were measured. Insulin like growth factor-I, insulin like growth factor binding protein 3, and sex hormone binding globulin level were measured. We divide the subjects into noraml vitamin D group and vitamin D deficiency group by serum 25-hydroxyvitamin level 20 ng/ml. RESULTS: Mean age was older in normal vitamin D group than in vitamin deficiency group with significance(P=0.042). Activity was significantly different between normal vitamin D group and vitamin deficiency group(P=0.001). Education level and financial state were not different between normal vitamin D group and vitamin D deficiency group. Body mass index and body fat were significantly lower in normal vitamin D group(P=0.012, P=0.001). Lean body mass was significantly higher in normal vitamin D group than in vitamin D deficiency group(P=0.004). Systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in normal vitamin D group than in vitamin D deficiency group after age adjustment(P=0.041). Uric acid level was significantly higher in normal vitamin D group(P=0.018). Fasting glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and serum albumin level were not different between normal vitamin D group and vitamin D deficiency group. White blood cell counts, high sensitivity C-reactive protein, and homocysteine level were not different between normal vitamin D group and vitamin D deficiency group. Insulin growth factor-I level was significantly higher in normal vitamin D group than in vitamin D deficiency group after age adjustment(P=0.013). Insulin like growth factor binding protein 3 level was significantly higher in normal vitamin D group(P=0.001). Sex hormone binding globulin level was not different between normal vitamin D group and vitamin D deficiency group. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D has some effects on metabolism and hormone secretion. If more investigations about multiple roles of vitamin D were done, we could anticipate wide use of vitamin D for not only bone metabolism but also metabolism and hormone secretion.
