The Effect of interocular Difference of Retinal Illuminance on Streopsis

PURPOSE: Weexaminedtheeffectofinducedinteroculardifferenceofretinal illuminanceon stereopsisunderbinocularcycloplegiatoeliminatethechange of pupilsizeandaccommodation. METHODS: Fifty adultswho havebestcorrected visualacuity 1.0 orbetter and normalbinocularity were examined with neutraldensity filters under binocularcycloplegia.While the monocularretinalilluminance was gradually reduced by increasing thevalueofneutraldensity filters,wemeasured the distanceand nearbestcorrected visualacuity and stereoacuity with Titmus, TNO and Lang stereotest.We used neutraldensity filterfrom 0.2 neutral density(ND)to3.0ND withintervalsof0.2ND. RESULTS: The distance and near best corrected visualacuity began to decreasesignificantly when thevalueofneutraldensity filterreached1.4ND. Stereoacuity also began to declinewhen thevaluewas1.2ND with Titmus stereotestand TNO stereotestand 2.0ND with Lang stereotest.In themean value of the minimum neutraldensity filter with which visualacuity or stereopsis began to decrease, distant visual acuity (1.62ND) decreased significantly earlierthan nearvisualacuity (1.80ND).Stereoacuity with TNO stereotest (1.30ND) decreased significantly earlier than that with Titmus stereotest (1.42ND) and stereoacuity with Titmus stereotest decreased significantlyearlierthanthatwithLangstereotest(2.19ND).Stereoacuitywith TNO and Titmus stereotestdecreased significantly earlierthan distantand nearvisualacuity. CONCLUSIONS: These results imply thatthe stereopsis testcould be more usefulthanvisualacuitytestfordetectionocularabnormalitiesinfluencingthe retinalilluminance.
