Abstract
dc:descriptionPURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome of the out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and the emergency medical service system. METHODS: From October 2001 to September 2003,we collected data about all out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients visited our emergency medical center. Data were collected with our records based on the Utstein style and report paper of emergency medical service. RESULTS: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was attempted in 123 patients. 51 (41.5%) patients achieved return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) at least once,31 (25.2%) patients admitted alive and 9 (7.3%) patients discharged alive. There were 105 (85.4%)witnessed arrests and 74 (56.9%) by stander witnessed arrests. Bystander CPR was performed in 6 (6.5%) patients. Witnessed arrest and bystander CPR did not significantly affect the survival rate.In the group of 119 resuscitation, cardiac massage was performed in the all cases, but endotracheal intubation and laryngeal mask airway were performed in 4 (4.9%)cases.Although the initial rhythm at arrival to ER was ventricular fibrillation in 22 (29.3%) cases, defibrillation performed in the ambulance were 4 (18.2%) cases. CONCLUSION: By stander and 119 resuscitation were not satisfactory in the care of the out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.Witnessed arrest and bystander CPR did not significantly affect the survival rate. This means there are some problems in our pre-hospital care for the out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients.
