Abstract
dc:descriptionThis study was conducted to investigate what effect fire officials' shift work and job stress on fatigue. For that, 473 structuralized questionnaires were administered to the entire fire officials in Yongsan Fire Station including the field firemen working on a two-shift basis and daytime-only fire fighters, and the entire fire officials in Gangnam Fire Station where the whole field firemen work on a three-shift basis, out of 22 fire stations, for 10days from August 24, to September 2, 2009. 403 sheets were collected and analyzed. Following is the result of analysis. First, as for the job stress difference according to subjects' variable of working situation, working period, duty, position, shift work type and desirable work type seemed to show a statistically significant difference. Second, as for the effect the variables of subjects' demographic characteristics, working situation, shift work type, health-related behavior and job stress factor have on the sum of fatigue, position and physical condition seemed to have a significantly negative effect, and job demand, organizational system and occupational climate seemed to have a significantly positive effect on fatigue. Also overall fatigue, daily fatigue and situational fatigue seemed to have a partly negative and a partly positive effect. As such, as for the job stress difference according to working situation, job stress seemed higher with people working for 10~15 years than people working below 5 years, people in charge of fire control, driving, communication and others than people in charge of administrative task, Sobanggyo and Sobangjang than Sobangsa and Sobangwi, shift workers(2nd or 3rd shift work) than daytime workers(non-shift work), and people whose desirable work type is shift work(2nd or 3rd shift work) than daytime workers(non-shift work). As for the effect the variables of fire officials' demographic characteristics, working situation, shift work type, health-related behavior and job stress factor have on the sum of fatigue, the higher the position and the better the physical condition of fire officials is, the lower the fatigue becomes. It was found out that stress concerning job demand, organizational system and occupational climate was higher compared to that of low danger group. Overall fatigue and daily dysfunction was the same as the effect on the sum of fatigue. It was found out that situational fatigue was higher than that of low danger group in the lack of reward except for the organizational system out of above results. In conclusion, though fatigue is subjective one, it is necessary to research it more concretely and objectively by grafting the cause of fatigue relating to the characteristics of fire officials' duty with ergonomic method of research. It seems that national policy and fund should be supported including improvement of medical welfare and improvement of nutrition to lower the fatigue of fire officials and to do health care efficiently. Also individual physical rhythm of fire officials should be grasped and an alternate program for job stress and fatigue useful for fire officials based on the research considering the general characteristics of work type should be developed in order to apply it to practical affairs
