Change Process and Decisional Balance According to the Stages of Change for Mammography in Middle-Aged Women
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe purposes of the present study were to assess the distribution of stage of change for the screening of mammography for early detection of breast cancer and to identify mean differences of processes of change and decisional balance at each stage of change. Two hundread eighty six middle-aged women living in Gyunggi-Do were recruited from July 16 to August 31 in 2007. To identify the stage of change, I used a Rakowski’s single question which consisted of pre-contemplation, contemplation, relapse, action, and maintenance. Process of change and decisional balance were measured using a Rakowski’s scale(1996,1997) for mammography. The data were analysed using the SPSS Window Program(Ver. 13.0). Summery as follows; 1. The distribution of the stage of change was pre-contemplation 17.5% (50/286), contemplation 24.8% (71/286), relapse10.1% (29/286), action 28.0% (80/286), and maintenance 19.6% (56/286). 2. Among the processes of change, sharing information and communi cation were used most frequently in all stages of change. The processes of change showing significant difference were commitment to regular screening, sharing information and communication, and thinking beyond oneself, except general perception of health care system. 3. Score of pros in decisional balance was strongest in the stage of maintenance, the next were action, contemplation, relapse, and pre-contemplation. The highest score of cons was showed in the stage of pre-contemplation and followed by the stage of relapse, action, contemplation and maintenance. According to the results of above, it seems necessary to having staged education program along the stages of change for commitment of mammography for screening breast cancer.
