The impact of Physical and Mental relaxation programs on the Firefighter’s Mental Health

The purpose of this study is to verify the effectiveness of healing program through comparing between before and after applying the program to risk person, after identifying firefighter’s level of Post Trumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD),Depression, Stress. On-Line Survey about 3 measures PTSD, Depression, Stress(Mental Health) was conducted with 5,808 Gyoung-gifirefighters from 2/18/2013 to 2/22. Through the On-Line Survey,191 firefighters, who were suspected of a risk person by more than 1 of 3 measures, were selected as an experimental group, and also the other 191 firefighters(samegender) were randomly selected as the control group. Post survey was conducted from 2014/1/9 to 1/13 with same manner after the Healing program, which took 5~7 months, was applied to experimentalgroup. Healing Programs on this study are 4 themes, Aroma therapy program A, Healing forest program B, Group debriefing program C,Meditation & Yoga program D.Questionnaire with pre and post survey is consist of the nature sociology of population, the job characteristics, PTSD, Depression and Stress. PTSD questionnaire is used with the Korean Version of Impact of Event Scale-Revised, Depression questionnaire is used with the Korean Version of Beck Depression Inventory and Stress questionnaire is consist of job strain questions from the Stress Response Inventory and Korean Version of KOSS-SF. For the verification of Homogeneity among groups about general feature, Chi-square test and T-test were conducted and for the verification of difference in PTSD, Depression and Stress, Chi-square test was conducted. For the verification of Homogeneity among groups about generalfeature, Chi-square testand T-testwere conducted, and for the verification of difference in Mental Health,Chi-square test was conducted. The Paired t-test was conducted for verifying the effectiveness of 4 healing programs to Mental Health. Finally,the Multi-variate Anova test was conducted for verifying the difference in PTSD, Depression and Stress, depend on each healing program after revising gender, alcohol level, work period, work type, business field. There is no difference in PTSD depend on sociodemo graphic characteristics and job characteristics, but some differences in depression and stress are shown depend on drinking habit. In pre-post interventionation survey to groups, mental health of the experiment group gets better. However mental health of the control group gets worse or better. Depend on the each program, PTSD level shows much effectiveness in C program, butlittle in D program. Depression level shows a lot of effectiveness in C program, butlittle in D program. Stress level was drop down with A program, but not with C program. Those 4 programs on this study work wellfor reducing level of Mental Health on firefighter. Ther is no difference in Mental Health following each healing program. According to the analysis off actor in the recovery and aggravation, there is no difference in PTSD and Depression depend on socio demographic characteristics and job characteristics. However, some difference was shown in Depression depend on work type and shift work characteristics. Accurate and professional diagnosis is necessary on firefighter’s health, further more, developing special program suitable for firefighter is urgent for curing their health impairment. Above all, national concern and awareness should be preceded, and in company with that, continuous support from governmentisnecessary.
