Dynamics and manipulation of surface states

Abstract

dc:description

The properties of two-dimensional (2D) electronic states located at the surface of the (111) faces of the noble metals Ag, Cu, andAu as well as 2D overlayer states of single atom layer Sodium films on Cu(111) have been investigated using scanning tunnelingspectroscopy (STS). All measurements were performed using a low temperature (T=4.6 K) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) operating in ultra highvacuum which was built as part of the thesis. The lifetime of holes at the surface Brillouin zone center of the noble metal surfaces was recorded using STS at locations on thesurface far from defects. The results are compared to a new theoretical treatment of electron-electron scattering, achieving aconsistent picture for the first time. The influence of defects – steps as well as impurities – located on the surface of Au(111) onto the formation of electron standingwaves is shown and the dispersion E(k) is derived by Fourier transforming the standing wave pattern. Similar measurements werealso performed on Na films on Cu(111), were the coverage determines the binding energy of the overlayer state. Utilizing the high spatial resolution and stability of the STM, single Manganese atoms adsorbed onto Ag(111) were arranged toregular structures and STS was performed of single Mn atoms in these quantum resonators. It is found that Mn atoms electronicallycouple to the modified electronic environment inducing a contrast reversal in the STS signal. The dimension and geometry of thequantum resonator thus provide a degree of control over the adatom electronic structure.
