Abstract
dc:descriptionThe submitted thesis 'bootstrap – Deviation from common sense' analyses different variants of identity construction and their relation to holistic systems. First Humberto R. Maturana's system idea is discussed representing an approach from the natural sciences and Niklas Luhmann's concept representing sociology. Emphasis is placed on a critical analysis of the system idea in art, which Luhmann studied closely. In this context, a historical overview summarizes ideas of idealistic aesthetics. However, an aesthetic theory based on idealistic metaphysics of art is neither to be hypostatized into the site of revelation for the absolute, nor into a pattern for the individual experience of reception. Artistic production is no longer understood as the work of an individual, but instead as a type of social occupation. From this aspect the thesis views the idea of public sense. The total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk) in its different forms, for instance, appears as an open system, although in the course of history it was repeatedly subjected to dogmatic thought. Thus it has not been able to develop the variability of an autopoetic system and was prone to ideological abuse by the National Socialists among others. A following chapter deals with the aspect of spirituality and the influence of theosophic thought on artists like Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. The total work of art is juxtaposed with a variant of the art of living, more open towards the system, – coming very close to situationist initiatives – which are introduced on the basis of Michel Foucault's 'Aesthetics of Existence' and the analyses of Wilhelm Schmid. In this context, the term 'bootstrap' is to be situated, which as a description hitherto rarely used now contributes to clarifying the outlined processes. It does not represent pioneering explorations, but merely describes mechanisms of interrelations in system theory. The term is appropriate because Geoffrey Chew used it in precisely this respect to define a hypothesis in physics in the 1950s. The crucial difference to Luhmann's theory is the stress put on the interrelation. Finally the individual expression of world views is treated. In doing this, the categories set up by Hermann Nohl are revised and juxtaposed with a more variable formation of types. Examples from art (e.g. Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, and Sigmar Polke) are to illustrate the resulting thoughts. At the same time, the system idea will once more be considered and the problem of experiencing reality in digital aesthetics is addressed. Studies by Horst Bredekamp, who elaborated a historical comparison of Thomas Hobbes' 'Leviathan' (1651) and the internet, serve as reference for this discussion.
