Radonexpositionen im Innenraum und deren gesundheitliche Bedeutung für den Menschen : eine Literaturübersicht anhand der 'Proceedings of Indoor Air' von 1978 bis 2005

dc:descriptionPROBLEM: Every three years there are International Conferences on Indoor Air Quality and Climate and the results of these conferences are written down in so called Proceedings. So far it is not clear whether or not there are informations about radon and its indoors exposure as well as its effects on human health in these Proceedings, which cannot be found in the international literature which is much easier accessible for the public. It was the task of this thesis to get an answer to this question. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Proceedings of the Indoor Air Conferences between 1978 and 2005 have been checked by five Ph.D. students. After a harmonisation of the methods the interpretation was done using an Excel matrix. Following this procedure each student worked on a special topic. The topic of this thesis is the exposure of radon in indoor air and its effect on human health. The results of the Proceedings have been compared with studies found in PubMed in the same time frame. RESULTS: In the Proceedings we find factors which have an impact on the concentration of radon in indoor air: existence of a cellar, type of building, different rooms within the building, construction materials, seasonal effects, supply water or spring water, geological factors, air pressure, aerosols and tobacco smoke. It is described which actions can be taken to reduce the concentration of radon in indoor air, such as ventilation and channeling of air pressure. Aspects of publicity and regulations are discussed, such as rules for the development, evaluation and respecting of laws and regulations. It is shown how important radon in indoor air is for the developing of lung cancer. A comparison with studies found in PubMed for the period between 1978 and end of 2005 showed mainly a consensus regarding the information relative to the topic of this thesis. Informations which could be found exclusively in the Proceedings of Indoor Air concerned changes of air pressure as a method to bring down the concentration of radon in indoor air. Informations which could be found exclusively in PubMed concerned the effect of meteorological factors on the concentration of radon in indoor air as well as the appearance of other diseases than lung cancer caused by radon such as different kinds of cancer, leukemia, multiple sclerosis. CONCLUSION: The Proceedings of Indoor Air partly give additional information, which cannot be found in the articles of the PubMed – and vice versa. Many topics have been presented at first in the Proceedings of Indoor Air. It should therefore be considered how the informations found in the Proceedings of Indoor Air could be made available for the public in a quicker and easier way.
