In cardiac function diagnosis several invasive and non-invasive examination procedures are available. To determine the cardiac volume and pumping function the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered to be gold standard. Different workgroups have already examined the correlation of conventional multi-slice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) and MRI while determining the cardiac volumetry. Good to excellent analogies were discovered. The distinctiveness of dual-source computed tomography (DSCT) is to be found in its two tube detector systems, thus contrasting conventional MSCT. For this reason the chronological resolution continued to be improved. Therefore a more exact determination of the cardiac volume should be possible. It was the intention of the dissertation at hand to examine this aspect by determining the cardiac function parameters using DSCT. The results were compared with those of the cardiac MRI. The cardiac parameters of the left and right ventricle had to be assessed, both time-dependent and time-independent. The examinations took place between June and October 2008 and were executed with nine female German domestic pigs. The results: The parameters of left and right ventricular end diastolic volume (EDV), end systolic volume (ESV), ejection fraction (EF) and stroke volume (SV) could be assessed with a high degree of accuracy. Thus, DSCT proved to be coequal with MRI. Although the myocardial mass, PER (peak ejection rate), PFR (peak filling rate), TPE (time to PER), and TPF (time to PFR) merely show a marginal correlation of values between these two examination methods, the results point out that DSCT, beyond coronary angiography, offers further possibilities in cardiac diagnosis. Nevertheless, echocardiography and MRI are sufficient procedures in cardiac function diagnosis that are not only more gentle in handling in-patients but also more cost-efficient. Therefore a computed tomography examination solely to determine cardiac function parameters is not indicated. But if there is the necessity of processing a CT during clinical routine to display the coronary vessels, left and right ventricular cardiac function could be assessed within the examination in terms of an ideal data use. In this case further cardiac function diagnosis does not need to be processed.
