Rezeptorarchitektonische Kartierung der Broca-Region und angrenzender Areale im posterioren inferior-frontalen Kortex

In order to enhance our functional and anatomical understanding of Broca’s region and neighbouring areas in the posterior inferior-frontal cortex, a multimodal parcellation was conducted to create the foundation for a reliable localisation of functional activations. The present doctoral thesis gives the first complete, comprehensive receptor architectonic description of the posterior inferior-frontal cortex. The laminar and regional distribution patterns of the neurotransmitters noradrenalin, acetylcholine, GABA and glutamate were used in combination with cytoarchitectonic mapping for a detailed parcellation of this region. In addition to the classical cytoarchitectonic areas 4, 6, 44, 45, 47 three new areas bordering on Broca’s region were identified based on their receptor architectonic organisation: area DTC (dysgranular transitional cortex) and areas IFJ 1 and IFJ 2 (inferior frontal junction). The Analysis of receptor distribution patterns in the posterior inferior-frontal areas resulted in a functionally relevant parcellation which revealed a clear differentiation between the areas of Broca’s region and the remaining posterior inferior-frontal areas. Furthermore, similarities in the receptor distribution patterns of areas 44 and 45 corroborate the combination of these two areas into a single region: Broca’s region. Moreover, subdivisions of areas 44 and 45 of Broca’s region were identified based on their receptor architectonic organization. For area 44, the receptor distribution patterns indicated a subdivision into a dorsal and a ventral part, whereas area 45 was subdivided into an anterior and a posterior subdivision. Additionally, the receptor architectonic organisation of the inferior-frontal areas shows strong resemblances between Broca’s region and premotor area 6 indicating common functions of these areas. In contrast, a functional dissociation can be assumed between the areas of Broca’s region and areas DTC, IFJ 1 and IFJ 2 based on their differences in receptor architecture. Available receptor-architectural mapping of the posterioren inferior frontal cortex, in particular Broca’s region and its transition to the motor cortex in combination with probabilistic cytoarchitectonic maps may serve as a basis for further investigations of the structure functional relations in this region, by allowing a reliable cortical allocation of functional activations.
